If you need to travel a long distance with your children or want to get somewhere as quickly as possible, flying is one option to get your family to your destination. When you're flying, you need to plan certain details associated with your trip, such as how you're going to get to and from the airport. One option is an airport shuttle. Here are a couple of tips to follow when using an airport shuttle with small children.
1. Ensure the Shuttle Accommodates Car Seats
Many different types of vehicles are used for airport shuttles. Some of the alternatives, like vans and smaller buses, may enable you to use a car seat for your child during your ride. If you have a long ride to or from the airport, you may prefer that your child ride securely in a carseat. Or, if you'll be traveling during nap time or late at night, having the ability to use a car seat will give your child a chance to rest. You'll just need to take a few extra moments to secure the car seat. If you can use a car seat, check that you know how to secure it using a seatbelt or vehicle tethers.
Larger shuttles likely won't have seatbelts or tethers for you to attach your car seats. Depending on the design of the shuttle, you may be able to sit and hold your child. If the shuttle has an open design and there's ample space, you can bring your child on-board in their stroller. You may need to bring car seats on your trip even if you can't use them on your airport shuttles; if so, consider using a rolling carrier to transport them so that they're less cumbersome to travel with.
2. Ask About Scheduling the Shuttle for a Specific Time
You should inquire about the logistics of using the airport shuttle. Some shuttles allow you to reserve your airport transportation ahead of time so you can specify the time and date you need them; the shuttle will arrive during your specified time to take you to and from the airport. Many families with children like the convenience and predictability of this option.
Other shuttles operate on a schedule that takes riders on a first-come, first-serve basis. You'll have to wait till the shuttle makes its rounds for your transportation, and there might be a short waiting period at the shuttle stop. Make sure to have plenty of snacks and activities on hand to keep your children entertained and comfortable while you wait.
