Are you getting ready to break in to the trucking industry? Here are a few things to think about before you start applying for truck driver jobs.
CDL Type
Almost any trucking job you apply for will require that you possess a CDL (commercial driver's license) before they will hire you. But there are different types of CDL options that can be obtained depending on the type of trucking you want to do. Your options are as follows:
Class A – Required for those who want to haul large load trailers, tractor trailers, livestock, flatbeds, and liquid tanks.
Class B – A requirement for truckers hauling small trailers or driving box trucks.
Class C commercial licenses are also available, but they are reserved for those who want to drive small hazmat vehicles and passenger vans, which are things you won't likely be doing as a trucker. Once you decide which type of CDL to obtain, you will have a better idea of what specific types of trucking jobs will be available to you in the area where you want to work.
Distance
You also need to carefully consider whether long distance trucking is right for you, or if staying around your home area would be a better option. If you have never driven long distances before, consider planning a road trip and driving a few hundred miles to get a feel for what it would be like to work as a long-distance trucker.
And take the time to talk to your family to see how they would feel about you being away from the household for multiple days as a time. Then compare the pros and cons of both long distance and local trucking on paper before you make a final decision.
Transport
It's important to consider how you will transport items as a trucker before you start looking for work. If you plan to purchase or lease your own truck, you can work as an employee or an independent contractor then create your own work schedule and client list for optimal flexibility as time goes on.
If you can't or don't want to manage your own truck, you can apply for jobs with companies that will provide transportation for you and offer some job security. But you'll be more restricted when it comes to things like work days, vacations, and travel itineraries. You can rent a truck and try freelancing for a month or two, and then get a temporary job with a company that provides you with a truck to figure out which option suits you the best.
