Warehouse operations for large companies and retailers can be the heart of the business, and making sure that your warehouse flow is smooth and effective is critical. Storage solutions, organization, and cross-docking of time-sensitive products can help increase the productivity of your warehouse and, in turn, the entire business.
Warehouse Storage
Products coming into a warehouse that will later go to a business, need storing until the time comes to ship them out. Retailers often set up their warehouses to ensure they have the space to dedicate some storage to the inventory that is not needed in the stores yet.
For warehouses that work with many businesses, keeping a lot of inventory for each company is not always possible. Dedicating one area of the warehouse to each business can help create some space within the limits of the building size. Large warehouse operations often have racks dedicated to specific customers and many customers with products stored and waiting for shipping.
Just-in-Time Shipping
Sometimes the best way to handle the volume is through a process of just-in-time shipping. Essentially this means that products are held in smaller numbers in the warehouse and shipped only after they sell a specific amount of that item in the store. This can also mean that the warehouse does not hold as much product on hand because they may not need to.
Often there are trigger points or levels that prompt manufacturers to ship products to the warehouse and for the warehouse to ship to the customer. This kind of shipping is harder in some respects because even a minor shipping delay can cause the entire system to fail.
Many warehouses build a small overstock into the system to avoid problems, but this means that the organization of the storage area in the warehouse is critical.
Cross-Docking Products
Moving perishable products or items that have very specific deadlines often means cross-docking the goods in the warehouse. The system of cross-docking needs to be exceptionally well organized, so there is no delay between the trucks arriving at the warehouse with the goods and trucks arriving to pick up the products.
Cross-docking is just what it sounds like. The product is unloaded from one truck then taken across the dock and loaded on to a waiting truck. For the system to work, both carriers need to be on time, and the warehouse has to be ready to transfer the freight as soon as it arrives.
The entire process can happen extremely quickly, but without it, some products would not make it to market in a condition that would allow retailers to sell them.
